Antananarivo

The Capitol of Madagascar is the economic and administrative centre of the country. With ca.100 km² expansion and 4 million habitants the biggest city of Madagascar.

It was founded 1625 by Merina king Andrianjaka.

Antananarivo was called Analamanga - the "blue forest" - until 1610, when the Merina king Andrianjaka had his palace built on the highest hill in the city (more than 1,300 m above sea level) and built everything there. first Rova with the Besakana Palace to post a garrison of 1,000 men there. The old Analamanga then took the name of Antananarivo: the "city of the Thousand", in reality a fortified village, protected by numerous circular ditches and whose access is via seven megalithic gates. It is from the site of the first Rova that the city develops gradually to extend over the whole of the hill (and become the current historical core). Its rise coincides with that of Imerina, territory of the Merina ethnic group.

The years of rivalry between English Protestants and French Catholics finally saw them, fighting against the Merina monarchy, obtain, in 1885, authorization to install a diplomat in the city. Ten years later, French troops took possession of the island. The name of Antananarivo is then francized to become Antananarivo.
