Ampefy and Lake Itasy

Lake Itasy
 
Lake Itasy is the biggest lake in Madagascar at an Altitude 1,221m to 1,221m over sea and 2,979 ha. Located 10 km south-east of Analavory and 25 km north-west of Soavinandriana. It is a freshwater crater-lake with marshy areas in its southern and eastern parts, lying within a steep-sloped volcanic massif. It is permanent, with seasonal variations in the water-level, having an average depth of 4 m but reaching up to 10 m at its centre. The Andranomena and Mariandrano rivers feed the lake in the east, while the Lily river flows out of the lake. The lake receives a lot of sediment from the rivers and from the eroded adjacent slopes.
 
Because of its situation in the volcanic area it is a special place in Madagascar. With Only 2- 3 hours and 120km west from the capitol Ampefy is also the favourite vacation resort for the citizens of Antananarivo.  
 
The President of the Republic Andry RAJOELINA accompanied by his wife Mialy RAJOELINA went to the district of Ampefy on 5 December 2021 to attend a series of events. Firstly, the inauguration of two roads leading to two emblematic tourist sites in the Itasy region. These are the paved road of 5km 400 leading to the Islet of the Virgin and the one leading to the Lily waterfall which extends over 5km. The îlot de la Vierge, a place of pilgrimage built by President Philibert Tsiranana, has also undergone rehabilitation work.

The islet of the Virgin Mary is made up of hills covered with greenery, flowery meadows, in the middle of these hills is overhung a statuette of the Virgin Mary, many pilgrims from all over the world visited this place.


The Lili Falls

One of the most important attractions in the Ampefy region is a visit to the Lili Waterfalls. Located in Antafofo, you can already admire the beauty of the volcanic region on the street to these famous waterfalls. 
 
You can get there by car, on foot or by motorcycle while enjoying the view from the surrounding volcanic hills. 
 

When you approach the waterfalls, you will notice a noticeable cooling of the air. The Lili Falls are more than 20 meters high. The power of the flow caused by the waterfalls is so great that the water drops on its underside can cool the air significantly over several meters. 
 
 
There are many legends surrounding these waterfalls. The most popular is about the daughter of a stranger who drowned when he fell on these cases from above. The body of the young woman named Lili was never found. In his honor, the residents called the place "Les Chutes de la Lili". 
 
Discover the geysers of the West.
 
 
If you want discover the amparaky geysers, you have to drive 10 km from Ampefy to Analavory and drive west from there. From there you have to follow a run up to 12 km long. 
 
 
You will then reach an area with clay-containing yellow soil from which water jets flow. 
 
 
Note that the water from these is not hot. However, the beauty of the landscape is worth a visit.
